The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters now contains more than 103 million registered voters, as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
The commission also announced that it had completed nine of the 14 activities outlined in its revised timetable for the elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday when he received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan said operational readiness assessments were ongoing across the six geopolitical zones as the commission intensified preparations for the polls.
He also announced that INEC was conducting a nationwide Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collection exercise across all 774 local government areas.
According to him, collection points have been decentralised to registration areas and wards to make it easier for eligible voters to collect their cards.
The INEC chairman further revealed that the commission had procured 57,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices to strengthen its technological capacity ahead of the elections.
He added that preparations were underway for election materials covering the country’s 176,846 polling units, alongside efforts to improve logistics and strengthen security coordination.
Amupitan said INEC was also seeking further cooperation with the United Kingdom in key areas, including cybersecurity, training of electoral personnel, voter education, strategic communication and efforts to combat disinformation.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a “free, fair, credible and inclusive 2027 General Election.”
