Jay Jay Okocha Reveals Ronaldinho Asked Why Nigeria Missed 2026 World Cup

Former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has revealed that Brazil legend Ronaldinho questioned him about Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles missed out on the tournament after losing the African play-off final to DR Congo, ending their hopes of reaching the competition.

Okocha made the revelation while speaking on the Obi One Podcast, where he also praised former Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi for openly criticising the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers star said speaking publicly about the NFF was difficult for him because of his relationship with the federation’s leadership.

“Kudos to you, John Mikel, you’re speaking up against the Nigerian Federation,” Okocha said.

The Nigerian football legend explained that his close relationship with the NFF president made it harder for him to publicly attack the federation.

“I live in Nigeria, and the NFF president is my friend, so it’s difficult to speak up,” he said.

Okocha then disclosed that Nigeria’s failure to qualify had become a talking point even among his former international colleagues and football personalities outside the country.

“I get asked by my colleagues like Ronaldinho why Nigeria hasn’t qualified for the World Cup,” he said.

Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup has generated widespread debate over the country’s football administration and the performance of the national team. Okocha’s comments add to growing calls for accountability and reforms within Nigerian football.
