King’s College Lagos: Police Take Over Premises as Concession Dispute Sparks Fresh Tension

The premises of King’s College, Onikan, Lagos, were placed under heavy police presence on Wednesday as tensions continued over the Federal Government’s proposed concession of the school to its old boys’ association.

The deployment followed several days of protests by parents, including a confrontation on Tuesday involving some parents, police officers and members of the college’s old boys’ association.

By Wednesday morning, protesters were no longer visible around the school gate, while police vehicles and officers had cordoned off roads leading to the main entrance.

The police presence also affected traffic around the area. Vehicles travelling from the Tafawa Balewa Square end towards the CMS bus stop were diverted to alternative routes as officers controlled access around the school.

Meanwhile, senior members of the King’s College Old Boys Association arrived at the institution for a meeting to discuss the proposed concession and the way forward.

Those present included the association’s National President, Ibrahim Kassim Imam, and former Nigerian Bar Association president, Olumide Akpata.

The Federal Government’s proposal to concession King’s College to its old boys’ association has generated opposition from some parents and other stakeholders, who have raised concerns over the arrangement.

The latest police deployment comes amid continuing disagreements over the proposed concession, with stakeholders expected to further deliberate on the future management of the historic Lagos school.
