Lagos Building Collapse: One Dead, Two Injured During Manual Demolition in Alimosho

One person has died and two others were injured after a two-storey building being manually demolished partially collapsed in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at No. 42 Governors Road, Aboru, prompting the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to deploy its Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa-Oshodi unit.

Emergency responders arrived at about 12:56 a.m., secured the area and immediately began search and rescue operations after reports that people were trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Preliminary findings by LASEMA indicated that the building gave way while workers were carrying out manual demolition. The collapse left several people trapped under the debris.

A joint operation involving LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) led to the rescue of two adult men from the rubble.

LASAMBUS officials administered first aid to the rescued victims at the scene before transporting them to a nearby health facility for further medical assessment. LASEMA, however, confirmed that another adult male was found dead beneath the collapsed structure.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.

Oke-Osanyintolu warned developers and property owners against ignoring safety requirements during construction and demolition. He urged the public to engage certified professionals for such activities and report potentially dangerous structures or demolition work through the 767 or 112 emergency lines.

LASEMA said security agencies and community leaders were also working with emergency responders to ensure safe access to the site and the completion of the operation. The state government reiterated its plan to strengthen emergency response capacity and maintain a target of reaching incidents within 10 minutes across Lagos.
