Lagos Police Confirm Death of 23-Year-Old Law School Student in Victoria Island Hostel

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student Faith Alayande at a hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Alayande was reportedly found unresponsive within the hostel premises on Friday, August 7, 2026, following an incident involving the rooftop of the four-storey building. The circumstances surrounding her death are now being investigated by the police.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, saying the hostel matron reported the matter to the police. She said a hostel mate and a relative of the deceased reportedly found a note believed to have been written by Alayande and began searching for her.

Adebisi said the student was later found after falling from the rooftop. Police officers were subsequently deployed to the scene, while her remains were evacuated to a morgue for preservation.

A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, also reported the incident on X, stating that another student discovered Alayande within the hostel and alerted the institution’s matron. Makama said the Chief Matron of the Law School, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, reported the case at the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30am.

He said the matron later went to the hostel, where the student was found on the ground. Preliminary observations, he added, indicated that she may have fallen from the rooftop of the four-storey building.

Police have not established the full circumstances surrounding the death. In particular, the contents and authenticity of the alleged note remain subject to investigation.

The Lagos State Police Command said its investigation is ongoing as officers work to establish what happened before the student was found.
