LaLiga President Tebas Hits Back at Real Madrid Over Refereeing ‘Conspiracy’ Claims

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has rejected Real Madrid’s claims of a refereeing conspiracy after their 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, accusing critics of reviving what he described as an old narrative against the league’s officials.

The controversy followed Sunday’s Madrid derby, with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho raising concerns over several tackles during his post-match press conference. Mourinho reportedly brought printed screenshots showing incidents he believed should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players.

Tebas responded to a pro-Real Madrid article on social media, arguing that refereeing decisions in LaLiga are not being influenced to favour particular clubs.

The LaLiga president criticised what he described as attempts to portray the competition as being controlled by a permanent conspiracy against Real Madrid.

“Here they go again, the mouthpieces and the regime’s television, building the same old narrative — the permanent conspiracy,” Tebas wrote.

He also challenged an argument in the article suggesting that refereeing decisions could harm the commercial interests of the league. Tebas questioned whether such a position implied that referees should make decisions based on revenue, television audiences or the status of a club.

“What exactly is it asking for? Refereeing based on revenue, viewership, or the badge?” he wrote, questioning the interpretation of equality in the competition.

Tebas acknowledged Real Madrid’s importance to LaLiga but rejected suggestions that the league has little value without the Spanish giants. He said such claims diminish the importance of other clubs, their supporters and their history.

“Real Madrid are crucial to LaLiga,” Tebas said, while arguing that the competition itself does not belong exclusively to one club.

The exchange adds another layer to the fallout from the Madrid derby, with refereeing decisions once again becoming a major talking point following Real Madrid’s defeat to Atletico Madrid.
