Lionel Messi is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in recognition of his football career and his contribution to Argentina.

UBA’s Superior Council unanimously approved the conferment of the Doctor Honoris Causa, the university’s highest honorary distinction. The award is scheduled to be presented to Messi on Tuesday, October 6, shortly before Argentina’s farewell match against Benin at the Monumental Stadium.

The university said the recognition goes beyond Messi’s achievements on the football pitch, citing what it described as his excellence, perseverance, humility, ethical conduct and commitment to representing Argentina.

UBA also highlighted Messi’s role in Argentina’s major international successes, including the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América. The university also noted Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final.

UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the institution wanted to recognise Messi not only for his statistics and sporting achievements but also for his wider cultural influence and role in representing Argentine identity.

“Beyond what all Argentinians know about Messi, regardless of the numbers and statistics that attest to his status as an athlete, we also want to recognise a humble, persevering person, an example and ambassador of our popular culture and national identity,” Gelpi said.

UBA Vice-Rector Emiliano Yacobitti similarly said the distinction recognised the values Messi displayed while representing Argentina. He described the honour as a tribute that extends beyond the footballer’s sporting career and reflects his influence on Argentine society.

The honorary doctorate comes as Messi prepares for his expected final appearance for Argentina. He was called up for the October 6 farewell match against Benin after announcing his retirement from international football in August, with coach Lionel Scaloni saying he wanted the veteran captain to receive a proper farewell in front of his home supporters.
