FG Launches Digital Postcode System to Tackle Missed, Failed Deliveries

The Federal Government has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System designed to improve addressing and reduce missed and failed deliveries across Nigeria.

The initiative was launched on Thursday through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.

Tijani said poor addressing costs Nigeria an estimated N50 billion to N80 billion annually through failed and missed deliveries. He added that the problem also affects emergency response, security operations, financial services, businesses and government planning.

Under the new system, every addressable building is assigned a unique 11-character alphanumeric postcode linked to its geographical location. The code is structured across five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.

The minister explained that the postcode is tied to the building rather than the occupant, meaning it can remain associated with a property even when residents or businesses change.

The system is intended to complement existing address details by providing a standard digital location reference that can be used across different platforms and services. It is GIS-enabled and covers addressable buildings in both urban and rural communities.

NIPOST’s platform allows Nigerians to search for, save and share their postcodes, while a process is also available for requesting a postcode where a building has not yet been captured. Organisations will be able to integrate the codes into their own platforms and operational systems.

Tijani urged Nigerians to find their postcodes and begin using them when sharing their locations with businesses, service providers, family members and others. He said the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s Digital Public Infrastructure and broader digital economy agenda.

The Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, previously described the system as a machine-readable framework for identifying addressable buildings nationwide, with potential applications in logistics, e-commerce, emergency response, financial services, security and public planning.
