Military Vehicle Crashes Into Traders in Taraba Market, Five Killed

Five traders have reportedly died and several others sustained injuries after a military vehicle crashed into traders at Peva Market in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, leaving traders and residents of the community in shock and mourning. The military vehicle was reportedly attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Wukari.

The vehicle was said to be escorting traders travelling from Wukari to Takum as part of security measures along the route, which has faced repeated incidents of kidnapping and killings, particularly around the Chanchanji axis.

A resident, Tony David, said the victims were among traders who had displayed their goods along the roadside when the military vehicle allegedly lost control and rammed into them.

David said five people were killed in the crash, while several others suffered injuries. The deceased and injured victims were reportedly taken to Takum General Hospital for treatment and other necessary procedures.

The crash has triggered grief among residents and traders, with calls for authorities to investigate what caused the military vehicle to lose control. Unverified allegations that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol were also raised, although this could not be independently confirmed.

Peva Market is located within the Chanchanji Ward area, which has experienced persistent security challenges, including attacks and kidnappings. The military escort was reportedly intended to provide protection for traders using the troubled route.

Lieutenant Umar Mohammed, Acting Public Relations Officer of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Jalingo, said he was looking into the incident. “I’m on it. I will get back to you on it soon,” he said.

Taraba State Police spokesperson, ASP Victor Mshelizah, said he became aware of the incident through a social media post and was contacting the Divisional Police Officer in Takum to verify the casualty figure and obtain more information.
