Fresh controversy surrounding the primary elections of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has forced the party leadership to issue a clarification after reports emerged alleging that some candidates loyal to Rabiu Kwankwaso were removed from the winners’ list in Kano State.
The party said no official primary election results have been released anywhere in the country, warning members and the public against circulating unofficial lists claiming to contain names of successful candidates.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, amid growing tensions within the party over the conduct of the primaries.
The development follows reports that surfaced on Monday alleging that candidates linked to Kwankwaso, the party’s vice-presidential candidate, were dropped from the final outcome of the exercise in Kano State.
Reacting to the claims, the NDC insisted that any result currently being circulated should not be treated as authentic because the party has yet to officially announce winners from the nationwide primaries.
“The party has not released any official results of primary elections in any state,” the statement said, urging party supporters to disregard unauthorised lists and speculations making rounds online.
The party also confirmed that leaders of the Kwankwasiyya Movement recently held a closed-door meeting with the national leadership of the NDC as part of efforts to resolve disagreements linked to the Kano primaries.
According to the statement, the meeting involved the national leader of the party, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside other top party officials and representatives of the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
The NDC explained that the discussions focused on resolving issues between members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and legacy party officials in Kano State, while reassuring members that the leadership remains committed to fairness and internal democracy.
“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy,” the statement added.
Party officials described the lengthy meeting as productive, suggesting that ongoing reconciliation efforts may help calm tensions ahead of the next phase of the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
