The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections due to the overseas engagement of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The party announced the postponement in a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, citing Obi’s tight schedule and an important engagement abroad.
The inauguration, initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, has now been rescheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026.
According to the statement, the change was necessary to accommodate Obi’s overseas engagement. The party apologised to members and supporters for any inconvenience caused by the adjustment and urged them to remain focused on securing victory for Obi and other NDC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
The planned inauguration was initially expected to take place alongside a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), where key decisions relating to the 2027 elections were due to be ratified.
The NDC’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, had announced the original schedule on Saturday, expressing confidence in the party’s preparedness for the electoral contest. He also reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
Cleopas said the NEC meeting would provide an opportunity to inaugurate the campaign council, ratify key electoral decisions and present Certificates of Return to the party’s candidates. A dinner was also planned to strengthen cooperation among the candidates.
The party chairman dismissed claims that the NDC was inactive or divided, describing the allegations as propaganda by political opponents.
He maintained that the party’s National Working Committee had held several meetings since August and submitted proposals on the composition of the National Campaign Council for consideration by the leadership.
The postponement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. The NDC is seeking to strengthen its organisational structures amid allegations of internal divisions and concerns about its level of preparedness for the polls.
The campaign council’s inauguration is expected to form part of the party’s broader efforts to coordinate its campaign activities and mobilise support for its candidates ahead of the elections.
