The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has drawn a firm line ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring it will not become a platform for individual political ambitions. Party leaders say the focus is on building a durable political structure anchored on internal democracy and national interest.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, said the NDC is being deliberately structured to outlive personal political interests and avoid the internal conflicts that often weaken political parties in Nigeria.
Dickson stressed that the party will not serve as a “special-purpose vehicle” for any presidential hopeful, insisting that ambition must never override collective vision. He said the goal is to create a political institution driven by ideology, reform, and service to citizens.
His remarks come amid growing political conversations around potential alignments involving figures such as Peter Obi and expectations surrounding the role of Rabiu Kwankwaso as parties begin early positioning for 2027.
According to Dickson, the NDC will actively resist any attempt by individuals to hijack its structures for personal gain. He emphasized that leadership selection must remain transparent and rooted in democratic processes rather than backroom arrangements.
“We are not building a special-purpose vehicle for any individual. We are building together a political party that will stand the test of time,” he said, underscoring the party’s commitment to long-term political relevance rather than short-term electoral calculations.
He added that strengthening internal democracy remains central to the party’s identity, noting that Nigeria’s political space needs institutions that can survive beyond election cycles and individual ambitions.
The NDC leadership maintains that its mission is to reposition political engagement around accountability, ideology, and public service, warning that any deviation from these principles would be firmly resisted.
