Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89 After Serious Health Battle

Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 89 after a serious health battle, with his son Crown Prince Haakon set to succeed him.

The Royal Palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35am on Friday, August 28. The Norwegian royal flag was lowered to half-mast at the palace in Oslo as the country began mourning the monarch.

Harald had been receiving treatment in hospital since August 17 for haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. His health had deteriorated sharply in recent days, prompting Queen Sonja, Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and other members of the royal family to gather at his bedside.

Members of the public also gathered outside the Royal Palace to pay tribute to the king. Some laid flowers while others described Harald as a warm and unifying figure who helped bring Norwegians together despite political and social differences.

Harald became king in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. During his 35-year reign, he faced several health problems, including infections and respiratory difficulties, and was fitted with a pacemaker. Despite his declining health, he repeatedly rejected suggestions that he should abdicate, saying he had made a lifelong commitment to serve as king.

The monarch was hospitalised again in February after suffering an infection and dehydration while on a private trip to Tenerife with Queen Sonja. His death comes during a difficult period for the Norwegian royal family, which has faced several health and legal challenges involving senior members.

Queen Sonja, also 89, was briefly hospitalised in May with heart problems. Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been receiving treatment for a serious lung condition and underwent a lung transplant in July, while her son, Marius Borg Hoiby, is facing legal issues following his conviction on rape and other charges.

Despite the controversies surrounding the royal family, Harald remained widely respected in Norway. His death marks the end of a long reign remembered by many Norwegians for his modest style and emphasis on unity, while Crown Prince Haakon now takes over the throne.
