NSCDC Arrests Two Over Alleged Illegal Gold Mining Operation in Abuja

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have arrested two suspects after uncovering an alleged illegal gold mining operation in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

The operation followed what the NSCDC described as credible intelligence and a petition alleging unlawful mining activities within the coordinates of a valid exploration licence.

According to a statement by the Mining Marshals, a specialised enforcement team was deployed to the site, where the suspects were apprehended at an active gold extraction location.

Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that mining activities were being carried out outside the boundaries of an approved mineral title area, raising concerns over possible violations of mining regulations and unauthorised exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The NSCDC also said the alleged operation had raised environmental and security concerns, noting that residents had previously complained about the effects of unregulated mining activities in the area.

“The suspects are currently assisting investigators, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the operation,” the statement said.

Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the mining activities and the extent of possible infractions under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, according to the Corps.

Commander of the Mining Marshals, John Onoja Attah, warned that illegal miners would not be allowed to operate freely anywhere in the country.

He said the ongoing enforcement campaign was aimed at ensuring that compliance with mining laws becomes the only sustainable path for operators, while those who violate the law face prosecution.

Attah said the latest operation was in line with the directive of NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to intensify the fight against illegal mining and other forms of economic sabotage threatening Nigeria’s mineral resources.

He added that the Corps had strengthened inter-agency collaboration, intelligence gathering and enforcement operations to tackle illegal mining and restore accountability in the solid minerals sector.

Attah further warned that individuals and groups involved in illegal mining would be identified, investigated and prosecuted, as the Mining Marshals continue efforts to disrupt illegal mining networks across the country.
