The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused judicial interventions of deepening internal crises within opposition parties, alleging that recent court decisions have weakened alternative political platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Tuesday, the opposition party also criticised what it described as the growing relationship between the executive arm of government and the judiciary, particularly the construction and presentation of new residential quarters and court facilities for senior judicial officers.
According to the PDP, although judges deserve improved welfare and modern infrastructure, presenting such projects with political fanfare creates an impression of executive influence over an institution that is expected to remain independent.
The party argued that the judiciary should serve as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s democracy rather than becoming a source of political uncertainty through rulings that, in its view, have repeatedly unsettled opposition parties.
“Instead of acting as a stabilizing force, judicial interventions have consistently thrown opposition political parties into internal turmoil, fracturing alternative platforms and systematically neutralizing dissent ahead of 2027,” the PDP stated.
The party further claimed that public displays surrounding government-funded projects for judges undermine public confidence in the judiciary’s neutrality, especially as courts are expected to adjudicate election petitions and constitutional disputes arising from future elections.
“When the executive positions itself as a ‘benevolent patron’ providing houses to the judges who will preside over high-stakes election petitions and constitutional disputes, the appearance of neutrality vanishes. He who pays the piper inevitably dictates the tune,” the statement added.
The PDP also expressed concern over what it described as an increasing trend of conflicting court orders and judgments, alleging that the development has contributed to political instability and uncertainty across the country’s opposition landscape.
The party called for greater judicial independence and urged institutions responsible for safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy to uphold fairness, impartiality and the rule of law as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
