The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has endorsed former Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, as the party’s candidate for the Imo East Senatorial District, also known as Owerri Zone.
Anyanwu announced his support during a PDP campaign rally held at St. Mary Catholic Church, Iho, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. He described Madumere as the most qualified among the contenders for the senatorial seat, citing his political experience, exposure and capacity to deliver effective representation.
The PDP National Secretary said Madumere’s political connections and experience in government would place him in a strong position to attract development projects and negotiate opportunities for Owerri Zone. He also declared that he had chosen to hand over his political leadership position in the district to the former deputy governor.
“Madumere stands tall among his contemporaries. Since I left the Senate, I have not handed over to anybody. Today, I have decided to hand over to Madumere the mantle of leadership in Owerri Senatorial Zone, and by the special grace of God, so shall it be,” Anyanwu said.
He further declared that the PDP remained active and prepared to challenge its political opponents, while highlighting the Rainbow Coalition as a platform for bringing together influential political figures. Anyanwu identified himself as the coalition’s chairman in Imo State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as its national leader.
Anyanwu also expressed his ambition to become the next governor of Imo State after Governor Hope Uzodimma’s tenure, claiming that political arrangements were being put in place through the Rainbow Coalition to achieve that objective. He warned critics of the coalition against opposing its activities, insisting that the platform was established to advance political aspirations and national development.
In his remarks, Madumere said he had engaged experts to conduct an aerial assessment and identify the development needs of communities across Owerri Zone. He promised to build on projects initiated during Anyanwu’s time in the Senate and ensure their completion if elected.
The PDP senatorial candidate said his priorities would include creating opportunities for young people, promoting women’s economic empowerment, attracting federal projects and supporting policies that improve living conditions across the district. He urged party members and stakeholders to work together, adding that his ambition extended beyond securing the Senate seat to helping the PDP reclaim the Imo governorship.
Madumere also predicted an increase in the number of people joining the party in the coming weeks and appealed to existing members to welcome new entrants. Meanwhile, PDP State Chairman, Barrister Austin Nwachukwu, urged members to demonstrate commitment and courage as the election approached. The party’s Zonal Secretary, Hon. Mike Ahumibe, also expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances, describing the contest for Owerri Zone as an opportunity the party could win if members worked together.
