Pope Leo XIV Warns Against ‘Losing Our Humanity’ to Artificial Intelligence

Pope Leo XIV has warned world leaders about the risks posed by artificial intelligence, urging societies to ensure that rapid technological advances do not come at the expense of human dignity and values.

The Pope issued the warning at the start of his four-day visit to France, during remarks to Church and state officials at the Élysée Palace in Paris following talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Pope Leo cautioned against what he described as the danger of “losing our humanity amid a paradise of machines,” highlighting the growing influence of AI on society and the need to keep people at the centre of technological development.

His comments come as governments, businesses and institutions around the world grapple with the expanding use of artificial intelligence in areas ranging from education and employment to communication and public services.

The Pope’s visit to France is expected to attract large crowds, with more than half a million people expected to attend the main Mass in Paris on Saturday.

Security measures have been tightened around central Paris ahead of the Pope’s public engagements. An altar has been constructed at the Place de la Concorde, while additional security arrangements have been put in place around the Champs-Élysées and surrounding areas.

Pope Leo was welcomed at Orly Airport by Macron after arriving in France on Friday. He is also scheduled to travel through Paris in his popemobile, with large crowds expected along his route to Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Following his visit to Notre-Dame, the Pope is expected to meet about 80,000 young people at the Stade de France in northern Paris. About 150,000 people have also registered to attend Mass at the Catholic sanctuary of Lourdes on Sunday.

The Pope is scheduled to conclude his visit on Monday in Metz, northeastern France, where he will pay tribute to Robert Schuman, a founding figure of the European Union and a devout Catholic who is currently a candidate for beatification.
