Arise News anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what he described as persistent attacks and harassment of opposition voices in Nigeria, warning that the trend could undermine the country’s democracy.
Oseni made the remarks on Wednesday during Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he questioned the ruling party’s treatment of political opponents and compared it with the approach adopted by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The broadcaster argued that Jonathan allowed opposition figures, including APC leaders who were critical of his administration, to express themselves without being arrested or silenced.
He recalled that opposition leaders openly criticised Jonathan, organised protests, called for a parallel government and demanded his resignation while the APC was outside power.
“If Jonathan had treated the opposition badly, would they be in power today? Would APC be in power? Jonathan allowed them to talk, he allowed them to protest, he allowed them to even abuse him. That is democracy,” Rufai said.
Oseni described it as shameful that the same party which enjoyed political freedom while in opposition was now, in his view, involved in targeting individuals who criticised the government.
He warned that continued attacks on opposition figures could push Nigeria towards a one-party system and create conditions for political instability.
The broadcaster urged the APC to tolerate criticism and concentrate on governance rather than confronting individuals and groups who disagree with its policies and leadership
