Cracks within political parties have often shaped the outcome of major elections in Nigeria, but Abia State Governor Alex Otti has urged members of the Labour Party to avoid that path as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Otti called for unity among candidates, party leaders and supporters, stressing that internal divisions could undermine the Labour Party’s ambitions at the polls.

Represented by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, Otti commended members for what he described as the maturity and discipline displayed during the party’s primary elections. He said the conduct of party members reflected the growing strength and stability of the Labour Party across the country.

The governor noted that Nigerians are increasingly looking to the Labour Party for credible leadership, practical solutions and progressive governance, adding that the party must remain focused on presenting a united front ahead of the next election cycle.

He urged all candidates who emerged victorious from the primaries to immediately engage with fellow aspirants and their supporters, insisting that internal contests should not create lasting divisions within the party.

“As we move forward, I strongly urge every successful candidate to immediately reach out to fellow aspirants and their supporters,” Otti said. “The contest is over. The assignment has just begun. We must bring everyone to the table and harness the strength, experience and networks of all those who participated in the process.”

The Labour Party leader also encouraged candidates to coordinate closely within their federal constituencies and senatorial districts, arguing that electoral success requires collective effort rather than individual campaigns. According to him, resources, structures and grassroots mobilisation should be shared to strengthen the party’s chances nationwide.

Otti warned that rival political parties would likely attempt to exploit any internal disagreements within the Labour Party. He urged members to set aside personal interests and focus on expanding the party’s influence across all levels of government.

Expressing confidence in the party’s prospects, he maintained that unity, discipline and commitment to a shared vision would be decisive factors in the 2027 elections. “The 2027 general elections will not be won by individuals; they will be won by a united party, a disciplined structure and a shared commitment to the aspirations of Nigerians,” he said, adding that victory would be achievable if members remain focused on the party’s collective goals.
