Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker, Sabinus, has criticised the treatment of citizens who demand good governance, questioning why Nigerians are discouraged from speaking out about the country’s challenges.
The comedian expressed his concerns in a social media post on Tuesday, saying citizens who call for accountability are often told to mind their business, while those who choose to stay away from public affairs are also subjected to criticism.
Sabinus questioned why Nigerians face discouragement when they demand better leadership and accountability from those in positions of authority, arguing that citizens should be able to speak up about issues affecting the country.
“A lot is going on in this country and we’re just keeping quiet. You demand for good governance, they tell you to mind your business,” he wrote.
He added that even those who try to avoid political discussions are not spared from insults, highlighting what he described as a frustrating situation for Nigerians seeking ways to respond to the country’s challenges.
“You try to mind your business, they still insult you. When are we going to come as one and demand for what we’re being owed?” the comedian asked.
His comments centred on the need for citizens to unite in seeking the rights, benefits and public services they believe they are entitled to, while holding leaders accountable for their decisions and actions.
Sabinus’s remarks have contributed to ongoing public conversations about governance, civic participation and the role Nigerians can play in demanding accountability. His post also raises questions about the pressures faced by citizens who speak out on national issues.
The comedian did not identify specific individuals in the post, but his message focused broadly on public frustration over Nigeria’s challenges and the importance of citizens being able to express their concerns.
