Vice President Kashim Shettima has formally submitted President Bola Tinubu’s nomination and expression of interest forms for the 2027 presidential election, signalling the start of the ruling party’s push for a second term bid.

The submission was made on Thursday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee headquarters in Abuja, where party leaders gathered to receive the documents on behalf of the president.

The development follows the earlier purchase of the ₦100 million nomination forms in April by James Faleke, acting on behalf of Tinubu and several support groups backing his re-election ambition.

Speaking during the presentation, Shettima defended the administration’s record, describing the president as a leader who has demonstrated strength and resilience in handling Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

He argued that the current administration’s policies, though tough, were necessary steps aimed at stabilising the economy and setting the country on a long-term recovery path.

Shettima also addressed concerns over inflation and the removal of fuel subsidy, insisting that the president remained committed to reforms despite public pressure and criticism.

According to him, the challenges of the past years have not weakened Tinubu but instead strengthened his leadership capacity in navigating what he described as turbulent national conditions.

The Vice President added that the administration had taken difficult but strategic decisions aimed at restoring investor confidence and repositioning Nigeria’s economic outlook.

Political consultations within the APC have been ongoing in recent weeks, with party stakeholders citing calls from across the country urging continuity in governance and ongoing reforms.

However, the 2027 re-election bid comes amid rising economic strain, including high living costs and inflationary pressures that continue to dominate public debate across the country.

Despite this, the presidency maintains that recent economic adjustments are beginning to show signs of stability, particularly in foreign exchange management and investment inflows.

The formal submission of the nomination forms now places President Tinubu firmly in the race for a second term, setting the stage for a highly competitive political season ahead of 2027.
