Super Eagles Thrashed 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau in AFCON Qualifier

The Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Bissau.

The result handed coach Eric Chelle his first defeat since taking charge of the Nigerian national team and left the Super Eagles with three points from their opening two matches.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute when Franculino Dju curled a fine effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria struggled to create a response before the break, with the hosts protecting their advantage as the Super Eagles failed to seriously threaten the Guinea-Bissau defence.

Chelle made two changes at half-time, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria looked to turn the game around.

Instead, Guinea-Bissau extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé, putting the hosts firmly in control.

Nigeria came close to pulling one back late in the game when George Ilenikhena was denied by goalkeeper Djoco Embadje from close range in the 87th minute.

Guinea-Bissau then completed a convincing victory when Álvaro Djaló scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The result moves Guinea-Bissau to six points from two matches, following their earlier 2-0 victory over Tanzania. Nigeria remain on three points after their opening 2-1 comeback win against Madagascar, leaving the Super Eagles with work to do as the qualifying campaign continues.
