President Bola Tinubu has officially clinched the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election after recording a sweeping victory in the party’s first nationwide direct primary.

The APC announced that Tinubu polled 10,999,162 votes across 8,809 wards nationwide, defeating his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, who secured 16,503 votes. The results were declared in Abuja by Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, chairman of the APC Presidential Primary Election Committee.

Tinubu dominated voting in nearly every part of the country, recording his strongest performance in Lagos with 814,988 votes. Other major returns came from Adamawa, Kaduna, Imo, Kano, Katsina and Gombe, reflecting the President’s continued grip on the party structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Osifo’s outing was largely symbolic, with the Edo-born businessman failing to secure votes in more than 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory. His best performances came from Niger, Kano and Bauchi states, though the margin remained overwhelmingly in Tinubu’s favour.

Speaking after receiving his certificate of return at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, the President urged Nigerians not to hand power to politicians “without a clear vision” for the country. He said the APC government had laid the foundation for long-term economic reforms and promised to consolidate ongoing projects if re-elected.

Tinubu defended key policies introduced under his administration, including fuel subsidy removal, forex reforms, education loans and electricity sector restructuring. According to him, Nigeria’s economy is gradually stabilising despite inflation and global geopolitical pressures. He also acknowledged the hardship many Nigerians are facing, insisting his government remains focused on delivering relief and long-term growth.

On security, the President pledged to intensify efforts against insecurity and called on the National Assembly to support constitutional amendments that would allow the creation of state police. He maintained that restoring peace across the country remains a top priority for his administration.

Meanwhile, the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, described the presidential primary as a “dress rehearsal” for victory in the 2027 general election. He dismissed allegations of irregularities during the exercise and insisted the ruling party remains the strongest political force in Nigeria.

Attention has now shifted to the African Democratic Congress, where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayattu-Deen are set to battle for the party’s presidential ticket.

Atiku, ahead of the contest, urged delegates to focus on competence and national appeal rather than “social media popularity,” warning that Nigeria could not afford political experimentation at a critical period in its history.

The race toward the 2027 presidential election is now gathering momentum, with APC, ADC and the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress already positioning their strongest contenders for what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested elections in recent history.
