The football community across Nigeria and Italy has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of 25-year-old midfielder Emmanuel King Okoye, who collapsed during a match in Nigeria while visiting family.

Okoye, born in 2000, was playing a local game on Wednesday when he reportedly suffered a serious head injury after a heavy collision on the pitch, leading to his sudden collapse.

Emergency responders were immediately called to the scene and provided first aid before rushing him to hospital, but medical personnel were unable to revive him.

Reports from Notiziario del Calcio and the City of Canicattini Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred during what was meant to be a routine match during his visit home.

The tragedy has particularly shaken the Italian football community, where Okoye spent several years playing for a number of amateur clubs including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport.

Former club Pol.D. City of Canicattini paid tribute to the late midfielder, describing him as a committed and disciplined player who left a lasting impression during his time in Italy.

“The Pol.D. City of Canicattini is in mourning. Yesterday, April 29, while participating in a match in Nigeria – during what was meant to be a time of peace and family gathering – former Canary striker Emmanuel King Okoye tragically lost his life at the tender age of 25,” the club said.

They added that Okoye was remembered for his professionalism, character, and love for football, noting key memories from his time at the club, including a standout goal in Mazzarrone.

Tributes also highlighted the emotional bond he shared with former teammate Massimo Ficara, who also passed away prematurely, deepening the sense of loss within the club.

Officials, teammates, and supporters across Italy have continued to send condolences to Okoye’s family, describing his death as a devastating loss to the sport.

The tragedy comes just days after another shock incident in African football, where former Super Eagles forward Michael Eneramo reportedly collapsed and died during a friendly match in Kaduna, raising fresh concerns over player safety during local games.
