Valverde Faces Real Madrid Selection Battle Despite Mourinho Captaincy Decision

Federico Valverde is set to become Real Madrid’s new captain when Jose Mourinho begins his second spell as manager, but the midfielder is not guaranteed a regular place in the Portuguese coach’s strongest XI.

According to Marca, Mourinho’s decision to hand Valverde the captain’s armband will not give him an automatic starting role as competition for midfield places intensifies at the Spanish giants.

The main battle is expected to be between Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, with both players competing for a place in Mourinho’s preferred midfield setup.

Mourinho is reportedly planning to use a double-pivot system, which would limit the number of available positions in the centre of the pitch. The arrival of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City has further complicated the selection picture.

The Portuguese manager reportedly views Bernardo as a key player capable of controlling matches and dictating play from midfield. If the former Manchester City star occupies one of the central roles, only one position would remain for Valverde or Tchouameni.

That means Valverde could begin Mourinho’s second Real Madrid era as club captain while still having to fight for his place in the starting XI. His leadership status, therefore, may not translate into guaranteed playing time.

Tchouameni’s ability to operate as a defensive midfielder gives him a different profile, while Valverde offers energy, versatility and the ability to contribute in several areas of the pitch. Mourinho will ultimately have to decide which qualities best suit his tactical plans.

The situation creates an unusual challenge for Valverde: he may lead Real Madrid on the pitch as captain while simultaneously battling for a starting position. With Bernardo Silva seemingly central to Mourinho’s plans, the Valverde-Tchouameni contest could become one of the key selection battles at the club.
