Veteran Nigerian actor Dele Odule has opened up about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he once went as far as pricing his own casket during a moment of deep personal despair.
The respected Yoruba film star shared the emotional revelation during an interview on Feelright TV, where he reflected on struggles he faced earlier in his career despite decades in the film industry.
Odule said the incident happened when he felt completely defeated and had lost hope in his professional journey, believing his acting career would never progress further.
According to him, he was accompanied by fellow actor Olaiya Igwe during the visit to the casket seller, a moment he described as emotionally overwhelming.
“I had priced my own casket before, when I was in a state of hopelessness, and complete loss of hope. Olaiya Igwe went there with me. Olaiya started crying like a baby,” he said.
The actor explained that he was not suffering from illness at the time but was emotionally drained due to stagnation in his career and personal frustrations.
He said seeing his contemporaries succeed while he struggled added to his sense of discouragement and made him question his future in the industry.
“I wasn’t sick, I just believed I can no longer have breakthroughs in the industry. I was fed up,” he added.
Dele Odule, who began his acting career in the 1970s, eventually rose to prominence in 1993 after featuring in the Yoruba classic film Ti Oluwa Nile, which cemented his place in Nigeria’s movie industry.
His revelation has since sparked reactions among fans, highlighting the often unseen emotional struggles behind success in the entertainment world.
