A violent ambush by suspected armed bandits has claimed the life of a local vigilante during a security patrol inside the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State, highlighting the growing risks faced by community defenders in Nigeria’s troubled north.

The attack occurred on Sunday around 1:30 p.m. along the Bakin Layi axis, when a joint patrol team comprising police officers and local vigilantes came under heavy gunfire while on routine surveillance operations.

The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Hambali Sa’adu from Mai-Ari Village in Maimadi Ward, sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the attack. He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor and buried according to Islamic rites.

Security sources say the patrol team initially retreated under intense fire but quickly regrouped and launched a counteroffensive against the attackers in a fierce gun battle inside the reserve.

Authorities report that the response forced the bandits to withdraw, with several of them escaping with suspected gunshot injuries. The police also confirmed that four suspects were arrested during the encounter.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command, four of the attackers were killed in the exchange of fire, while a follow-up operation led to the arrest of additional suspects now in custody for investigation.

The incident has renewed concerns over security in and around protected forest zones, which have increasingly become hideouts for armed groups operating across parts of northern Nigeria.

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, described the late vigilante as a courageous defender of his community, commiserating with his family and residents of Mai-Ari village over the loss.

He also ordered intensified patrols and bush-combing operations around Yankari Game Reserve as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area.
