Akpabio Defends US Embassy Staff Withdrawal, Links Global Security Fears to Nigeria Travel Advisory

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed claims linking the reported reduction of United States diplomatic staff in Nigeria to the country’s political environment, insisting the move is driven by global security concerns rather than domestic elections.

His comments come after the U.S. Department of State authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from its embassy in Abuja, following a revised travel advisory citing rising insecurity risks in Nigeria.

The advisory, which took effect on April 8, 2026, urged American citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to concerns over crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and limited healthcare capacity.

Speaking at the commissioning of the new Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) headquarters in Abuja, Akpabio said it was wrong to interpret such diplomatic decisions as a reaction to Nigeria’s internal politics.

He argued that embassies around the world periodically adjust their staffing levels in response to broader global threats, not just country-specific issues.

According to him, heightened international tensions often force countries like the United States to reposition personnel across multiple missions for safety reasons.

Akpabio pointed to geopolitical risks involving nations such as Iran, suggesting that fears of attacks on diplomatic facilities can trigger precautionary withdrawals of non-essential staff worldwide.

He cautioned against what he described as “misinterpretations” that tie embassy actions to Nigeria’s electoral cycle, stressing that such assumptions are misleading and unnecessary.

The Senate President maintained that Nigeria remains stable and secure, urging citizens to avoid panic or political speculation over routine diplomatic security decisions.

He added that while global insecurity remains a concern, Nigeria’s internal situation should not be conflated with international security precautions taken by foreign governments.

Akpabio reassured Nigerians that the country would continue to maintain peace and stability despite rising global tensions and evolving security dynamics.
