Amaechi Rejects Vice President Rumours, Insists on ADC Presidential Ambition

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed speculation that he purchased the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential nomination form with the intention of becoming a running mate.

Amaechi made the clarification during an interview on Trust TV on Monday, amid growing discussions around internal negotiations within the party ahead of its presidential primaries.

The former Rivers State governor stressed that his ambition is strictly for the presidency, insisting he is not in the race to be someone’s deputy.

“Please stop that. I didn’t buy the ADC presidential ticket to become Vice President,” he said.

His comments come amid ongoing tensions within the ADC over possible consensus arrangements and zoning considerations for the 2027 presidential race.

Amaechi argued that if the party intends to adopt a consensus approach, it must be done through proper consultation involving all aspirants.

He added that where consensus fails, the democratic process of primaries should be allowed to decide the party’s candidate.

“If the ADC wants a consensus, then there should be a meeting. If we don’t agree, we go to the primaries,” he said.

The former minister has recently been vocal about internal party arrangements, including pushing back against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s stance on zoning, insisting that aspirants should be allowed to compete freely.

The remarks highlight early power struggles within opposition circles as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
