Bandits Kill 11 in Katsina Reprisal Attack After Failed Security Operation

A deadly reprisal by suspected bandits has left at least 11 people dead in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, exposing the fragile security situation despite recent military gains in the region.

The attack followed an earlier confrontation between security forces and armed fighters believed to be loyal to notorious bandit leader Mohammadu Fulani. Authorities say the initial operation successfully disrupted the group’s advance, but the aftermath proved devastating for civilians.

Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed the sequence of events, describing how intelligence reports alerted security operatives to the movement of armed men targeting key infrastructure in the area.

According to Mu’azu, a joint security team led by the Divisional Police Officer in Kankia intercepted the group before they could strike. The encounter resulted in a fierce gun battle, during which several attackers were killed. Security forces also recovered eight motorcycles and rustled cattle, a sign of the group’s operational scale.

Despite that early success, the situation quickly escalated. The surviving fighters reportedly regrouped and launched a second, more brutal assault hours later on Gwalgoro Village in Gyaza/Kunduru Ward.

Residents were caught off guard as the attackers descended on the community around midday, killing 11 civilians in what officials described as a retaliatory strike.

Mu’azu condemned the killings as a “cowardly act of terror,” while extending condolences to the families of the victims. He also acknowledged the role of local intelligence in helping security forces respond swiftly to the initial threat.

The latest violence underscores a recurring pattern in Nigeria’s northwest, where disrupted bandit operations often trigger revenge attacks on vulnerable communities.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information with security agencies, warning that sustained collaboration is critical to preventing further bloodshed.
