Fresh political momentum is building in Imo State as former Deputy Governor Eze Madumere formally joins the race for the Imo East (Owerri Zone) senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Madumere has secured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms, signalling a clear intent to return to frontline politics and represent the zone in the National Assembly. His move is already stirring conversations within the state’s political landscape, particularly in Owerri Zone where competition is expected to be intense.
A technocrat with international exposure, Madumere has long positioned himself as a strategic player in Imo politics. His allies often point to his role in the emergence of former governor Rochas Okorocha and current governor Hope Uzodimma as evidence of his deep political influence and network.
Framing his latest ambition as a “paradigm shift,” the former deputy governor said his decision reflects a renewed commitment to reposition Owerri Zone and deliver more impactful representation at the federal level. He stressed that the region requires a stronger voice capable of attracting development and influencing national decisions.
“We must keep hope alive. The time to reposition and re-engineer Owerri Zone is now,” he said, urging residents to rally behind what he described as a collective mission for transformation.
Madumere also promised a results-driven approach if elected, outlining priorities such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment, job creation, and improved healthcare systems. According to him, effective representation must go beyond rhetoric and translate into visible benefits for constituents.
His message appears carefully crafted to tap into longstanding concerns about underdevelopment and political marginalisation in parts of Owerri Zone—an issue that often shapes voter sentiment in the region.
Beyond policy promises, Madumere is also leaning on his reputation as a grassroots mobiliser, positioning himself as a unifying figure capable of bridging political divides and strengthening cohesion within the zone.
He further commended the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, particularly National Chairman Mohammad Abdulrahman and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, for stabilising the party and creating what he described as a level playing field for aspirants.
With early moves like this, the battle for Imo East Senate seat is already taking shape—and if anything, Madumere’s entry suggests it won’t be a quiet contest.
