Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has hinted that he could take an extended break from music rather than remain in the spotlight as he approaches 40.
The 33-year-old singer made the comments during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, where he reflected on longevity in the music industry and the need for established artistes to explore opportunities beyond recording and performing.
Davido said he does not see himself reaching 40 and continuing to compete directly with younger artistes in their 20s. He cited American rapper Jay-Z as an example of an established musician who stepped back from the spotlight while maintaining his influence.
“Music is my blood but I won’t be 40 years and still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break and he is doing his thing,” he said.
The singer stressed that taking time away would not necessarily mean the end of his career. Davido argued that his extensive catalogue could allow him to return after several years and still attract large audiences.
He went as far as suggesting that he could spend a decade away from music and still stage major concerts because of the body of work he has already built.
“I can take a 10yrs break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue,” he said.
Davido also suggested that he could choose never to record another song and still retain ownership and value from his existing music. He said the music business should provide artistes with a platform to build careers in other areas rather than making music their only path.
“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” he added.
While Davido did not announce a retirement or give a specific date for any possible break, his comments have raised fresh questions about how long one of Africa’s biggest music stars intends to remain at the centre of the Afrobeats scene.
