Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, has urged Nigerian students to prioritise creativity, leadership development and global awareness as essential tools for national transformation.
He made the call while speaking at the Skill Up Programme held at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, where he challenged students to move beyond academic certificates and focus on building practical, future-ready skills.
Madumere, who is also a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial hopeful for Imo East, encouraged students to reject social vices and the “get-rich-quick” mentality, stressing that the future of Nigeria depends on disciplined and purpose-driven youth.
He described the initiative as more than a training programme, calling it a “declaration” that young people must be prepared to take responsibility for the future.
“May this Skill Up Nekede initiative produce not just graduates, but global solution providers; not just job seekers, but job creators; not just successful individuals, but transformational leaders,” he said.
The former Deputy Governor warned that global development is rapidly shifting, driven by artificial intelligence, digital transformation and innovation, noting that countries are now judged more by human capital than natural resources.
He stressed that students must evolve into problem-solvers rather than passive job seekers, adding that competence and innovation are now more valuable than academic certificates alone.
“Your academic qualification gives you knowledge, but your skills make you indispensable. Your certificate may open the door, but your competence keeps you inside the room,” he stated.
Madumere also encouraged students to compete with themselves rather than others, describing personal growth and discipline as the true path to success in a highly competitive world.
He expressed confidence in the potential of young people in Imo State, describing them as intelligent, resilient and capable of excelling globally if given the right support systems.
According to him, Nigeria’s education system must be restructured to produce not just graduates, but innovators, entrepreneurs, inventors and job creators who can contribute meaningfully to the economy.
The former Deputy Governor outlined a long-term vision for Imo East Senatorial District, calling for stronger investment in skills acquisition centres, innovation hubs, scholarships, mentorship programmes and digital literacy initiatives.
He said such investments would help bridge the gap between education and employment while empowering young people to create opportunities instead of waiting for them.
Madumere also cautioned students against criminal behaviour, including cultism, drug abuse and internet fraud, warning that success built on dishonesty never lasts.
“Guard your integrity, respect your parents, honour your lecturers and reject cultism,” he said.
He further advised students to embrace continuous learning, build communication skills, strengthen emotional intelligence and seek mentorship to stay relevant in a fast-changing world.
Madumere added that the greatest legacy of leadership is not infrastructure, but the transformation of lives, stressing that his public service philosophy is rooted in youth empowerment and human capital development.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Mazi Nati Iwu Agwu, Apex Leader of the PDP in Mbaitoli LGA; Barr. Kelechi Ahamba, PDP House of Assembly candidate for Aboh Mbaise constituency; and Dr. Anukam, among others.
