Fela Kuti, Sade Adu Make History as First Nigerian Stars Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2026

Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026, marking a landmark moment for African music on the global stage and cementing their legacy among the world’s most influential artists.

The announcement was made on April 13–14 during a special Rock & Roll Hall of Fame segment on American Idol, where host Ryan Seacrest and veteran musician Lionel Richie revealed this year’s inductees live on ABC and Disney+. The selection was made by more than 1,200 industry professionals, including musicians, historians, and critics.

Fela Kuti was honoured posthumously in the Early Influence category, recognising his foundational role in shaping Afrobeat. His music fused West African rhythms with jazz, funk, and highlife, creating a revolutionary sound that also carried strong political messages against oppression and corruption.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most powerful cultural voices, Fela’s influence continues to resonate across generations of musicians and activists worldwide. His latest recognition follows a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier in 2026, further strengthening his global legacy.

Sade Adu, the frontwoman of the band Sade, was inducted in the Performer category in recognition of her decades-long impact on global music. Known for her smooth contralto voice and minimalist fusion of soul, jazz, and R&B, she rose to international fame with classics such as Smooth Operator and The Sweetest Taboo.

Her induction marks another historic milestone, as she becomes one of the first artists of Nigerian descent to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Together with Fela Kuti, the achievement represents a breakthrough moment for African representation in one of music’s most prestigious institutions.

This year’s class spans multiple genres and includes 18 honourees across four categories, reflecting a broad musical landscape that covers rock, hip-hop, soul, Latin, and Afrobeat.

The Performer category features names such as Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan.

The Early Influence category includes Fela Kuti alongside Celia Cruz, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons, while the Musical Excellence Award went to Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin. Ed Sullivan received the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

According to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording, with induction reserved for those who have made lasting contributions to music history.

The formal induction ceremony will take place on November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, with a televised broadcast scheduled for December on ABC and Disney+.
