Tension has gripped Ebubu community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of a young politician and community mobiliser, Samuel Obe Ngobe, by suspected assassins.
The attack reportedly happened on May 22 after armed men stormed a hotel owned by the deceased and opened fire on him at close range.
Residents said the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and headed directly toward Ngobe before shooting him multiple times in what many believe was a targeted attack.
Sources within the community disclosed that the gunmen were masked during the operation, making identification difficult.
Witnesses also claimed the attackers seized mobile phones belonging to hotel workers and individuals around the scene, apparently to prevent anyone from raising an alarm or recording the incident.
The killing has sparked fear and uncertainty within the community, with residents describing the attack as bold and carefully planned.
Ngobe was known in the area as a politically active youth figure involved in community mobilisation and local political activities in Eleme.
Although the motive behind the killing remains unclear, many residents suspect the attack may have been politically motivated due to the manner in which the gunmen carried out the operation.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed the incident.
“Investigation is ongoing on the matter,” the police spokesperson stated.
Security concerns have continued to grow across parts of Rivers State in recent months, with increasing reports of cult-related violence, targeted killings, and attacks linked to political tensions.
Residents are now calling on security agencies to swiftly identify and arrest those behind the killing to prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
