Nigerian Army Destroys Notorious Bandit Camps in Bauchi, Tightens Grip on Criminal Strongholds

Nigeria’s military has intensified its crackdown on banditry in Bauchi State, destroying key criminal camps and tightening its hold on areas long plagued by armed groups.

In a coordinated offensive, troops targeted notorious hideouts including the Azuge and Hari camps, dealing a significant blow to bandit operations and disrupting their networks across the region.

The operation, led by the 33 Artillery Brigade in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, focused on the Dajin Madam Forest—an area identified as a major hub for criminal activity. Military authorities confirmed that several bandits were neutralised during the raid, while others fled under sustained pressure from advancing troops.

Security forces also took 19 individuals into custody, including women and children believed to be family members of the fleeing suspects. Officials say the move is part of efforts to dismantle the support structures that enable bandit groups to operate.

Recovered items from the camps paint a troubling picture of the group’s tactics. Troops seized an AK-47 magazine, quantities of tramadol, and both police and military uniforms—raising concerns about attempts to impersonate security personnel. Two horses and multiple motorcycles used for mobility were also destroyed.

Military commanders say troops have now established control over the forest, a strategic step aimed at preventing the regrouping of fleeing bandits and sustaining pressure on criminal elements in the area.

In a follow-up operation in Mainamaji, troops reported no direct engagement with suspects, a development the Army attributes to the effectiveness of recent airstrikes and ground offensives that may have forced bandits to abandon their positions.

The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to maintaining aggressive operations until stability is restored, calling on residents to provide timely and credible intelligence to support ongoing efforts.

While the latest success signals progress, it also highlights a recurring challenge—military gains often need sustained follow-through to prevent bandits from returning or shifting operations to nearby communities.
