The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m. along the Tunga Taya-Woro axis, where two officers attached to the Service’s Wawa Control Post were reportedly attacked.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, identified the deceased officer as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I.U. Babangida.
The second officer, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape and is currently receiving medical attention, according to the Service.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service regrets to announce a tragic attack on two personnel of its Wawa Control Post in the Tunga Taya-Woro axis of Niger State, which led to the death of one officer and left another seriously injured,” the statement said.
The Service disclosed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, describing him as an officer who demonstrated commitment to duty.
It extended its condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
The NIS also assured both families of its continued support during the difficult period.
According to the statement, the Service is working with the Niger State Government and other security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains undeterred by this unfortunate incident and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders,” the statement added.
The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of security personnel operating in parts of Niger State, although the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identities of the attackers have not been disclosed.
