
A middle-aged man has died while several other passengers sustained serious injuries in a road crash involving a tipper truck and a Toyota Sienna bus in Umuahia, Abia State.
The accident occurred at about 1pm on Monday along Ossah Road in Umuahia.
The tipper truck, which was carrying wet sand, was reportedly returning from a sand mining site to a building site when it collided with the Sienna bus at a sharp bend.
The impact reportedly threw the truck’s conductor out of the vehicle, killing him at the scene.
Several occupants of the Sienna bus were injured in the crash and were evacuated to a hospital by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Abia State Command, for medical treatment.
Confirming the incident, FRSC Sector Commander in Abia State, Ngozi Ezeoma, said personnel from the command were deployed to the scene after receiving information about the crash.
Ezeoma said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
She also appealed to motorists and other road users in Abia State to observe traffic regulations and take necessary precautions to prevent avoidable crashes.
The accident adds to road safety concerns in the state, with authorities continuing to urge drivers to exercise caution, particularly on roads with sharp bends and other hazardous sections.
