Human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has officially clinched the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for another run built on his long-running message of systemic change.

Sowore was declared winner of the party’s presidential primary held in Abuja on Tuesday, with the AAC electoral committee describing his emergence as a reflection of confidence in his ideology, activism, and commitment to what the party called “credible opposition politics.”

The committee chairman, Kayode Babayemi, said Sowore’s candidacy represents continuity for a party that positions itself as an alternative voice in Nigeria’s political space, especially on issues of governance, accountability, and social justice.

In his acceptance speech, Sowore described the AAC as Nigeria’s only “genuine opposition,” insisting that the party has maintained a clear ideological stance since its formation.

He said the party has spent eight years positioning itself as a socialist alternative, claiming it refuses to “speak in tongues” or compromise its message, even when politically inconvenient.

According to him, Nigerians are exhausted by economic hardship, corruption, and poor governance, arguing that only a radical shift in leadership philosophy can address the country’s deep-rooted challenges.

He dismissed claims that the AAC lacks the structure to win national elections, saying the turnout and participation in the primaries reflect a growing base of support across the country.

Sowore also used the moment to reaffirm his long-standing call for what he described as “revolutionary change,” positioning the AAC as a platform for citizens frustrated with mainstream political parties.

This marks his third consecutive presidential run under the AAC, a party he founded after years of activism and political advocacy.

In a related development, the party announced a leadership change, confirming that Sowore has stepped down as national chairman.

The AAC said Samuel Ajeigbe has taken over the role as the new national chairman, marking a structural shift within the party ahead of the election cycle
