President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Army, promising greater investment in technology, local defence manufacturing and operational capacity to tackle the country’s evolving security threats.
The President made the pledge on Monday during the closing ceremony of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said strengthening the military remains a key priority as Nigeria confronts terrorism, insurgency and other emerging security challenges.
He said the Federal Government would continue deploying emerging technologies and building the Army’s capabilities across all operational theatres to improve combat readiness and strategic planning.
“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” the President said.
Tinubu also highlighted ongoing investments in research and development within the Armed Forces, stressing that efforts to revitalise the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) would boost local defence production, create skilled jobs and reduce reliance on foreign military equipment. He added that strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing would improve Nigeria’s capacity to support counter-terrorism operations.
The President welcomed the establishment of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as an important platform for enhancing defence cooperation among African nations and improving Nigeria’s role in regional security diplomacy.
Commending officers and soldiers for their sacrifices, Tinubu assured military personnel that the government would continue supporting the families of those who lost their lives while defending the country. He urged troops to remain committed to protecting citizens and upholding the dignity of every Nigerian.
“Serve the people with the same devotion you bring to defending them, for the uniform commands respect only when it protects the weak and upholds the dignity of every citizen,” he said.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara also praised the Nigerian Army for its progress in technological advancement and manpower development. He called for improved welfare packages for soldiers, saying better conditions of service would further enhance their effectiveness in protecting the nation.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed that more than 80 per cent of Nigerian soldiers are currently deployed in various operations across the country. He warned that the Army had detected signs of foreign jihadist infiltration through Nigeria’s borders but assured citizens that troops remain fully prepared to confront the threat.
Shaibu said the Army continues to monitor the worsening security situation across the Sahel region and expressed confidence that Nigerian troops would overcome present-day security challenges, just as previous generations successfully navigated major military conflicts.
This year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration was held under the theme: “Protecting the People and Serving the Nation: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army.” The event concluded with demonstrations showcasing the Army’s land and aerial combat capabilities.
