Troops Arrest Three Suspected Bandits in Sokoto, Recover AK-47 Rifle, Ammunition and Charms

Security forces have recorded a breakthrough in the fight against armed violence in north-west Nigeria after arresting three suspected bandits and recovering weapons during an operation in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The suspects were intercepted on Tuesday morning along the Tangaza–Gidan Madi road following credible intelligence that a group was planning an attack in the area.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the operation on X, said the arrests were made at about 10:00 a.m. on April 29 after security operatives laid an ambush along the route.

The suspects were identified as Aliyu Bello, 30; Dahiru Umar, 25; and Bashar Isah, 29, all reportedly from Kwazari village in Kware Local Government Area.

They were said to be travelling on a motorcycle when they were stopped and searched by security personnel.

Authorities believe the men are linked to a criminal network involved in kidnapping and the collection of illegal levies from rural communities.

A search of their belongings led to the recovery of a locally made AK-47 rifle, a magazine containing 17 rounds of ammunition, two Dane guns, two cartridges, and some charms.

Investigators say the weapons were carefully concealed inside a sack placed within another bag in an attempt to avoid detection during routine checks.

Security sources confirmed that preliminary interrogations are ongoing as operatives work to identify other members of the suspected gang and disrupt their wider network.

The latest arrest adds to ongoing counter-banditry operations across the north-west, where security forces have intensified efforts to curb attacks on rural communities.
