UK-based Nigerian legal practitioner Baron Chymaker has announced that he has officially commenced the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.
The lawyer disclosed on Thursday that his legal representative in Nigeria had completed the submission of his application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), adding that all required fees had been paid.
Sharing the update on his verified X account, Chymaker said he is now awaiting official approval from the Federal Government.
“I have today received a confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” he wrote.
Baron Chymaker is widely recognised on X for his commentary on international law, legal practice in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, as well as cryptocurrency-related issues. Over the years, he has built a large following through his legal analyses and opinions on public affairs.
The legal practitioner has also been a vocal critic of Nigeria’s judicial system. He has repeatedly questioned the application of the doctrine of judicial precedent, commonly known as stare decisis, arguing that it has contributed to controversial judicial outcomes.
His criticism became more pronounced following several election tribunal decisions, where he suggested that strict adherence to judicial precedent had produced outcomes he considered unfair.
While Chymaker has publicly confirmed that the renunciation process is underway, Nigerian authorities have yet to comment on his application or indicate when a final decision may be reache
