Victor Umeh Claims Early Warning Signs Showed Peter Obi Would Miss ADC Presidential Ticket

Questions are deepening around opposition realignments in Nigeria as Senator Victor Umeh says there were already clear signals that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi would not secure the African Democratic Congress ticket.

Obi recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after joining the party in December 2025, before aligning with the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time, Umeh argued that Obi’s exit did not come as a surprise, insisting the internal structure of the coalition already pointed to an unfavourable outcome.

According to him, the ADC coalition was built as a broad political alliance without a clearly defined leadership hierarchy, making it difficult from the outset to determine a natural presidential candidate.

He described the party structure as an “amalgamation of all comers,” saying prominent political figures from different backgrounds joined the platform without a unified command structure.

Umeh said the expectation was that the coalition would eventually stabilise and settle on a strong candidate capable of competing nationally, but that process never fully materialised.

“No, the signs were there,” he said when asked if Obi was informed he would not get the ticket, adding that experienced politicians could easily interpret the internal dynamics unfolding within the party.

He rejected suggestions that Obi left in frustration over access to a presidential ticket, describing him as a politician guided by principle rather than transactional considerations.

Umeh insisted that Obi is known for financial discipline and a reluctance to participate in heavily monetised party politics, arguing that such a system can discourage leaders who do not engage in financial bargaining.

“Mr Peter Obi… is not someone who wastes money,” he said, noting that Obi’s political choices are often shaped by his principles rather than negotiation-based politics.

The senator also acknowledged that he has now followed Obi’s move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, signalling further shifts within Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

The latest developments highlight the ongoing instability within opposition alliances, as key political figures continue to reposition themselves ahead of 2027.
