Benjamin Fredrick Set for Brentford Competitive Debut Against Reading

Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick is in line to make his long-awaited competitive debut for Brentford when the Bees face Reading in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews confirmed that the 21-year-old is expected to feature after being carefully managed ahead of the cup tie.

“He hasn’t had a lot of football. We decided not to play him yesterday in the B team game to make sure he was in the right place to be available today,” Andrews told reporters.

“I anticipate he’ll be involved.”

Fredrick joined Brentford from Simoiben Football Academy on loan in August 2023 before the Premier League club made the move permanent in April 2024. He subsequently signed a four-year contract with the Bees.

The Nigerian defender has previously been named in Brentford’s matchday squad twice but is yet to make a competitive appearance for the first team.

He spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Belgian side Dender EH as he continued his development away from England.

However, his progress was interrupted after he suffered an injury while on international duty with Nigeria last November. The setback ruled him out for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign.

With Andrews now indicating that Fredrick will be involved against Reading, the Carabao Cup clash could provide the young defender with an important opportunity to finally make his competitive breakthrough at Brentford.

For the Super Eagles, his return to competitive football will also be closely watched as Nigeria continues to monitor options in defence.
